The History of Château de Boisson

chateau de boisson son histoire

Although there is little information about the history of the Château de Boisson, we do know that during the 14th Century, it belonged to the leader of a small Seigniory (who was himself probably formerly part of the Seigniory of the Château d’Allègre). The lords of Boisson were allied with the bishops of Uzès and the barons of Portes who shared the land of Allègre. In 1425, there is a mention of Pierre de Haut-Vilar, who was the successor of the previous Pierre de Haut-Vilar and Aigline d’Allègre. These Haut-Vilars, maintained Boisson and the castle, until the end of the 17th Century. It was then handed on to the family of Mortenon de Chabrillant, before being relinquished sometime around the middle of 18th Century, to the Boudier de Laribal. The latter were in ownership of the castle until relatively recently (the last Monsieur Boudier de Laribal died at Salon de Provence in 1982).

For a long time silk-worm breeding was the principal activity of the Castle and also the village of Boisson. Reminiscent of these times, there are still some mulberry trees present in the castle courtyard.

Le Château d’Allègre

There is not much information about the ruined castle of Allègre either. Local historians date it from the 12th century when it is believed to have been a fortified camp; a village with considerable defences and various feudal towers. The first mention of Allègre dates back to 1211 and it was found amongst the possessions of the bishops of Uzès. This reference is supported by a letter sent by King Philippe Auguste used to confirm various possessions of this church. There were numerous lords and feudal tenants and amongst these were the Templiers. They owned the Peyrolles tower, Budos near Portes and the nearby Theyrargues castle (2 km away). An account of their possessions in 1678 reads as follows: “the eleventh command is that of Allègre with its three parishes: Our Lady of Arlinde, Saint Privat d’Auzon and Saint Félix de Boisson”. This episcopal message mentions the Château d’Allègre which appears to have been an fortress, situated on top of a high promontory, long since demolished and in ruins.
